Nestling in a thickly wooded valley, its serene and scenic surroundings have made Dehradun a popular tourist spot as well as a stopover for Mussoorrie, Haridwar, Badrinath and other major tourist attractions. The valley was a stronghold of the Garhwal rajahs until its takeover by the British, who later built Dehradun as a residential resort together with the famous Doon and Welham schools.
